Of the European Union, Germany is the largest nation of peoples and economy. The biggest city and capital is Berlin (3,471,756) with Hamburg being the next most inhabited city with 1,786,448 people.
As a member of DAC Network on Gender Equality (an international forum where experts have the opportunity to define approaches in support of gender equality), Germany has been one of the most active in establishing gender equality and financially supporting the empowerment of women. The Chancellor of Germany, Angela Merkel, is the longest-serving leader of a G8 country, the first female chancellor of Germany and the second women to chair the G8. In 2011, Merkel topped Forbes’ list of the most powerful women and came in fourth in the ranking of the world’s most powerful people overall.
Germans also value the rights of the disabled at the same level as basic human rights and offer a friendly legal and social climate to those of the LGBT community. A poll released by the BBC in 2011 indicated that the public voted Germany as having the most positive influence on the world.
Germany offers exceptional education for students from kindergarten to secondary school. Most German universities are public as well, students are required to write an entrance exam in addition to submitting their records from their time in secondary school and pay nominal fees per semester ranging from €50,00 – €500,00. Universities in Germany are world renowned according to the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU); in 2008 six German institutions made the top 100 and 18 make the top 200 list.
