Annual Median Income

Cint uses the median household income to provide a point of comparison between income-earners in each country.
Where the mean income average is the sum of all parts (or aggregate income) divided by the number of items (or income earners), the median average is the point that divides the population into two groups; half of the population makes an income below the median income amount, and half makes more than that amount. The median income is seen as a better indicator as it avoids the effect of dramatically high or low values.

Nice to Know about Greece

The country of Greece can trace its history back to ancient times where it was the birthplace of democracy, the humanities, university education and comedic and tragic theatricals. Although much of the philosophical, mathematical, astrological and political science literature was lost over time (to name only a few subjects of focus to intellects in 500-300 BC), the discovery of Grecian texts in the latter portion of the first half of the second millennium was the catalyst that sparked the Renaissance and Scientific Revolution.

The largest urban areas in Greece are Athens (3,074,160) and Thessaloniki (790,824). Almost two-thirds of the population reside in urban regions. Demographically, the country is undergoing change as the population ages, the birth rate falls over time and the mortality rate slowly increases. Additionally, Grecian society is seeing similar patterns as the rest of the modern world which includes a reduction in marriage rates (71/1000 in 1981 vs. 51/1000 in 2004) and heightened divorce rates (191.2/1000 in 1991 vs. 239.5/1000 in 2004).

Greek boasts an excellent universal healthcare system that is ranked one of the best in the world by the World Health Organization. Due to the economic situation facing Greece and the European Union, the country has announced plans to decrease the number of hospitals in the country, however the number of beds will increase and the standard of care will be maintained and in some cases, improved. Access to healthcare is one of the reasons Greece has one of the longest life expectancies in the world at 80.3 years. The Mediterranean diet has also been said to contribute to a longer life span. Although Grecians are known to be heavy smokers, the obesity rate is 18.1%, not bad compared to that in the US, 27.7%.
