Nice to Know about Japan
Japan is a gentle giant with the world’s 10th largest population, 3rd largest economy and 4th largest importer and exporter globally.
After World War II, the country officially wrote a clause into the constitution prohibiting an act of war by the state. The English translation of the article reads, “Aspiring sincerely to an international peace based on justice and order, the Japanese people forever renounce war as a sovereign right of the nation and the threat or use of force as means of settling international disputes.”
Japan also has a substantial Latin American community (albeit small compared to the overall population of Japan), largely comprised of Brazilians, who immigrated to Japan after immigration laws were relaxed in 1990 to allowing entry of third-generation Japanese descendants and their spouses.
Current demographics indicate possible economic difficulty in the coming decades, as the baby-boomers age and younger Japanese opt out of marriage and having children. There is much debate over how to solve the problem of what will be an aged population, limited workforce and increased costs of social security benefits. Housing in Japan is also characterized by limited land supply in urban areas which can contribute to increased housing costs.
Some of the largest enterprises in Japan include Toyota, Nintendo, Honda, Toshiba, Sony, Panasonic, amongst many others.
