Nice to Know about Portugal
Portugal is one of the top 20 most visited countries in the world. Its annual influx of 13 million tourists exceeds the population of 10.7 million! The largest and most visited city in Portugal is Lisbon the second largest is Porto with 237,559 residents.
The current population of Portugal is changing as the birth rate drops and immigration increases. Due to colonialism and the expansion of the Portuguese empire beginning in the 17th century, several Portuguese emigrated to other countries around the world as late as the 1970s. However, many of them and/or their descendants are returning and diversifying the Portuguese population. Ethnic minorities represented in Portugal include Slavs, particularly Ukrainian, Brazilians, Africans and Chinese.
Portugal also boasts robust national cuisine from the various regions of the country as well as award-winning wines. During the time of the Roman Empire, Portugal was associated with the god Bacchus (otherwise known as Dionysus of Greek mythology), the god of the grape harvest, winemaking, wine, freedom and ecstatic dance.
