Nice to Know about Russia
According to the UN Economic Commission for Europe, home ownership in Russia in 2004 was approximately 70%; however, the vast majority of households are urban-based (78.7%) and most dwellings are apartments (76.3%).
In owner-occupied dwellings, 94% did not have mortgages as they have received their households, from the state.
Russia has the world’s largest forest reserves and one-quarter of the world’s fresh water. In total, Russia covers 11 different time zones.
The largest city in Russia is its capital, Moscow; the second largest city is St. Petersburg with less than half of Moscow’s population of 4.9 million. Several other cities in the country, at least 11, have over one million inhabitants each.
Russia is often revered for its arts and culture. From the 18th to 20th centuries, the country has produced some of the most famous soloists, ballet dancers, novelists, critical thinkers and scientists. Additionally, the former Soviet Union and Russia is second of all nations to hold the most gold medals won at the Summer and Winter Olympic Games, excelling in gymnastics, track-and-field, wrestling, various skating sports, as well as basketball, volleyball, and perhaps most notably, ice hockey.
From 1964 to 2006, a Soviet or Russian pair won gold in figure skating. Russia’s performance in the 2008 and 2009 IIHF World Championships gained them the spot as the world’s top ranked ice hockey team, pushing Canada into second place.
Since the end of the Soviet rule, tourism in Russia has increased dramatically. One of the most famous natural destinations in Russia is Lake Baikal, home to almost a quarter of the world’s unfrozen fresh water, also known as The Blue Eye of Siberia, and one of the oldest, deepest fresh water lakes in the world.
