Why market research deserves dynamic AI defenses

When data protection relies on yesterday’s playbooks

If you grew up in the 1990s or the early 2000s, you’ll likely remember how you seemingly couldn’t open your mailbox, buy a movie ticket, or unpack a cereal box without a shiny piece of plastic falling out. America Online (AOL) had a dream: to connect every human on Earth via dial-up internet.

Their strategy was simple: keep shipping new versions of that core product. We went from AOL 3.0 to 3.5 to 4.75, and eventually all the way up to double digits. Every time a new version was released, it was treated as a massive technological leap forward.

But behind the marketing blitz, the reality quickly set in. Version 4.0 didn’t magically solve the fact that someone picking up the kitchen landline would still kill your internet connection. Eventually, those millions of free trial CDs lost all perceived value: they stopped being the future of tech and instead became excellent drink coasters, microwave experiments, or literal landfill fodder.

What, you might be wondering, does any of this have to do with market research? It’s simple: watching the sample industry right now feels a bit like experiencing déjà vu.

The myth of the “silver bullet” score

Here is the truth that anyone in the trenches of market research knows: there is no silver bullet for fraud.

A single scoring metric, no matter if it is version 6.0, 7.0, or 20.0, cannot stop modern, sophisticated fraud syndicates. Fraudsters do not wait six months for a platform to release a new version to update their tactics. They evolve in minutes.

Organized fraud networks utilize generative AI chat tools, script automation, and sophisticated device spoofing to execute velocity attacks, tamper with survey links to generate ghost completes, and submit unengaged open-ended responses. These automated systems easily study, reverse-engineer, and bypass any single static hurdle placed in front of them.

If your entire defense strategy relies on a single wall, it doesn’t matter how many times you repaint it. Once a fraudster learns how to climb it, the wall becomes useless.

When a fraud prevention tool relies on rigid, biannual major version updates, it tells you two things:

  1. The update is timed for a marketing milestone rather than real-time threat landscapes.
  2. It treats data quality as something you can fix with a singular, standalone metric.

Cint’s philosophy: Build an arsenal

At Cint, we don’t look at data quality through the lens of a single, standalone score. We focus on building a comprehensive, multi-layered system that helps deliver real answers to real questions.

Instead of building one massive wall, we build a complex defense matrix. We apply multiple layers of distinct hurdles throughout the entire respondent journey. The goal isn’t just to catch a fraudster at a single checkpoint; it’s to make the entire process of trying to exploit our ecosystem so time-consuming, expensive, and thoroughly frustrating that they simply give up and go somewhere easier.

Cint has Trust Score. It is highly effective, but we view it as just one weapon in a much larger arsenal of protective measures.

Unrivaled scale and machine learning: We process over one billion annual sessions to continuously feed and train an industry-leading “fraud immune system.”

Mobile-first fraud shielding: Our tailored defenses are built for mobile traffic, which represents 70% of our volume and is historically where fraud is hardest to catch.

Dedicated human intelligence: We employ a team of 20 Trust and Safety professionals enforcing 10+ quality checks across the workflow, guided by five organization-wide quality pillars.

Total reconciliation accountability: We operate under a single, transparent policy where every single reversal is documented with a clear reason.

Continuous, real-time upgrades: We regularly deploy new features and tighten algorithms dynamically as threats evolve.

Real security moves at the speed of fraud

The days of shipping software versions on plastic discs are long gone. Fraud prevention in data collection needs to move at the speed of the cloud, not the speed of a biannual press release.

By shifting the focus away from single-score “silver bullets” and investing in a living, breathing, multi-layered defense system, we ensure your data stays clean today, and our security measures never look like a stack of obsolete CDs.
