What are AI-moderated interviews?

The market research landscape is shifting and the race to capture deep, conversational insights at scale is officially on. Enter AI-Moderated Interviews (AIMIs), an innovative qualitative approach that combines the speed of automation with the depth of authentic, human-driven insights.

To find out more about how AIMIs are scaling up qualitative research processes, we spoke with Cint Senior Product Manager, Bruno Patriota.

How are AIMIs changing research?

A recent Cint blog asked a big question: as the market research industry begins to embrace conversational insights at scale, what will happen to researchers?

We asked Patriota for his thoughts on the topic.

“Anyone who’s ever tried to host a regular game night knows the truth: the hardest part isn’t the game, it’s getting everyone to actually show up.”

At this point, you might be asking yourself how this applies to AIMI studies. Patriota has the answer.

“For researchers, AI-Moderated interviews can be launched as easily as any quantitative research project in just a click of a button. The time-consuming complexity of setting up, launching, and moderating qualitative interviews is a thing of the past. That’s a game-changer for everyone.”

Speed isn’t the only benefit they offer.

“We’re seeing people being a bit more trusting in the AI moderator, being able to be more truthful with it, and we’re also seeing that the AI moderator is increasingly able to poke at the responses they’re given,” Patriota says.

AIMIs are convenient for respondents, which has a positive impact on everyone involved in the research industry. “Because you don’t have to deal with all of that scheduling given the availability of humans, your global reach and scale for qualitative measures is being seen at a rate and size that we’ve not seen before,” he says.

“I think that’s really the game-changer here: the speed and reach that comes from adopting AI moderators is having a positive impact on qualitative research.”

How is Cint supporting AIMIs on our platform?

“The exciting part is that Cint has always supported qualitative research, but the industry is shifting. Traditionally, doing a qualitative study meant telling a respondent they had to download a specific mobile app, log on at a rigid time, and speak to a live human on the other side who was listening in. It always came back to that painful scheduling issue.”

The good news is that the same voice and video infrastructure we built to support those human-to-human interviews is exactly what now enables AI moderation. We are taking that foundation and pushing for a completely frictionless respondent experience, with a lot of exciting updates on the horizon.

This shift also forces us to re-evaluate how we measure data quality in a high-speed, AI-driven world.

As Patriota puts it, “We are actively redefining what a “good quality answer” looks like for voice and video studies. A large part of that means building better ways to screen respondents upfront, ensuring we connect you with the exact right target audience to feed your curiosity and deliver deep insights.”

Why are AIMIs a prime example of how Cint’s scale is putting the human respondent at the centre of insights?

Cint uses innovative technology to keep real people at the foundation of market research. Our approach to AIMIs illustrates this commitment, leveraging our massive global scale to capture authentic, human-driven insights across even the most hard-to-reach audiences.

“Cint’s scale taps into a global presence, allowing you to reach niche or hard-to-reach audiences and regions to get your responses. It helps you gather a diversified dataset from specific respondent groups,” he says.

“For instance, you might be looking at markets beyond the US and UK. While English-speaking countries traditionally see the most market movement in research, we’re now seeing significant growth and increasing demand outside of them. An AI moderator is another tool for expanding into those regions.”

Because Cint already offers that baseline access and massive scale, we can connect anyone looking for answers with the exact right respondents. That, as Patriota puts it, “is fundamentally how we put human respondents at the center of insights.”

Even with the rise of AI moderation and companies training their own data models, at Cint we firmly believe that everything must be backed by real human data and human-driven insights.

Why is profiling, prescreening and good UI paramount for high quality responses?

Data quality in market research relies heavily on accurate audience definition. To capture premium, niche insights, researchers must establish precise profiling data to target the right demographics. This is why many buyers partner with specialized providers, such as Cint’s managed services, to leverage their targeting expertise.

“When we talk about the quality researchers are  after, we always ask: have you defined your right target audience? This goes beyond just something that happens in market research as a whole,” he says. “People need to be able to set the right profiling data to target the right demographics and people they’re after.”

The quality control process begins with clear qualification criteria. When a buyer defines their target parameters, Cint communicates these requirements across the supplier network. This triggers an optimized supply chain where suppliers intentionally route the right respondents, establishing a strong initial layer of quality.

Next, dynamic pre-screening filters respondents as they enter the ecosystem, verifying their demographic fit before they ever reach the survey. Buyers can then choose to layer their own in-survey screening on top of these automated safeguards.

“A lot of it really starts from buyers putting the actual respondents in the forefront and understanding what their experience is going to be throughout this journey. It is a little bit of a “what you ask is what you get” scenario,” Patriota says.

“In other words, the survey setup, audience definition, attractive pricing, and more, are important to receiving high-quality respondents and responses. The inputs are critical ingredients in determining the success and quality of the responses you’ll receive.”
